"The show is so slickly staged, beautifully designed and carefully acted its success is well-deserved" raves Variety in its review of The Sound of Music, fabricated by Great Lakes Scenic Studios.
Everyone loves the Sound of Music, and when it is an Andrew Lloyd Webber/Mirvish production you know you are in for an extra special treat. Such was the case with this staging of the timeless classic at Toronto's Princess of Whales Theatre. Great Lakes Scenic Studios was thrilled to be working once again with Mr. Webber and the Mirvishes building the set for the show. As you would expect, the scale was as grand as the storyline. One of the highlights was the majestic staircase that swept across the stage in all the pageantry befitting an Austrian of Captain Von Trapp's stature. Our welders, carpenters, scenic painters and automation people worked together to build a moving staircase that was as functional as it was beautiful.
The rest of the set was built to the same exacting calibre. From the ballroom walls to the giant chandelier, the scenery moved and danced along with the rest of the cast members. With our strong theatre roots, this build was as rewarding to work on as it was challenging.
