The City of Victoria came up with an ingenious way to promote itself with this replica coin-operated tourist binocular installation. Set up in Vancouver, the trick here was that when a person looked through the binoculars, they actually saw a number of vistas of beautiful Victoria, not Vancouver! The photos were all framed in a View-Master style slide mechanism. Viewers started off initially pleased that no coin was required to operate the binoculars and subsequently had a good chuckle once they peered through the looking glass at the images of Victoria on the display.
